Our Day Out with Ike 2025, Part 2

Our nephew Ike turned eight years old in October. We were finally able to catch up with him in order to go on this year's birthday outing this past Friday, November 28.

Ike chose to go to Nickelmania in West Jordan, which is a choice we can always get behind. For added fun, his 10-year-old sister, Katy, accompanied us. Katy spent a lot of her time on the ticket-producing strategy games, while Ike was more interested in the racing games.

Once we tallied up our combined tickets, Ike chose a green ninja sword, while Katy opted for a ... whoopee cushion. (Unexpected, but still a great pick!) We then adjourned for treats at Swig.

Nickelmania! Just Because

On July 23, my sister, Biz, invited me to join her and her two kids, Katy and Ike, on an excursion out to Nickelmania. There was no birthday or other special occasion to celebrate this time; this was just because Fun Uncle was in demand and was also more than willing to come along for the fun.

Ike immediately went for his favorite, the motorcycle-riding games:

And boy howdy, did we get tickets! With our combined tickets, we racked up more than 4,600, which is by far the biggest haul of any group I've been part of has won on one visit. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but (Honk! Honk!) I contributed by racking up multiple jackpots on some of my favorite arcade games:

Pics or it didn't happen and all that.

So, when we totaled up everything, the kids walked away with some fun prizes. I usually give them everything I've earned and pick out nothing for myself, but this time they really wanted me to get the umbrella hat we saw another guy wearing on his way out as we arrived. It looks like this:

Is it comfortable? Not really. But I imagine it helps keep the sun off of heads that no longer have the full amount of hair, if you catch my drift.

Christmas 2023, Part 2

On Christmas Eve, we gathered for Plowman family dinner at Biz's and Jeff's home in West Bountiful. We had all the fixings for a Christmas dinner, including ham, candied yams, funeral potatoes, charcuterie, meatballs, and other goodies.

Dinner was followed by our annual Christmas story pageant. The niblings enthusiastically dressed up as shepherds, wise men, angels, stable animals, and of course Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. In fact, six-year-old Tanner got a little too into the part of playing the baby, seen here resting (and cooing?) in the lap of his three-year-old sister Sadie, who portrayed Mary:

As always, the kids had a wonderful time taking part. As part of the pageant, we continued the family tradition of listening to Dad's recording of the Christmas story as found in chapter of the gospel of St. Luke.

Perhaps we began a new tradition by also playing a recording of Mom reading The Monster at the End of This Book, a family favorite since my siblings and I were very young, while Biz turned the pages in the story. We collectively felt her loss rather acutely during this holiday season and on this particular night, too, but I think this moment helped many of us to feel she wasn't really that far away from us.

In fact, it gives me a great deal of comfort to think that if she weren't already one of the angels who sang at the birth of the Christ child 2,000+ years ago that she is one of those angels singing His praises now.

Next came the exchanging of gifts. The niblings drew names from a hat to purchase gifts for each other, while my siblings and I did the same for each couple in the family. This way, everybody got to open at least one thing. Sadie was especially grateful for and protective of her Frozen action figure set:

Then followed a few family games, including a new one, "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Cup," that Biz borrowed from the Johnson Files, one of our favorite Instagram accounts. You had to be there to grasp what exactly this involved—but it was fun for all who played.

Christmas Day was, well, a rather lazy day at our house. Santa Claus came and left goodies, and JB and I exchanged gifts, too. My wife is very thoughtful when it comes to this sort of thing. One of my favorite presents was this T-shirt, based on The Lord of the Rings book/film series:

Hopefully, your Christmas was a good one spent with your own loved ones, too. If not, here's hoping for better times ahead and a better year for us all in 2024.

Our Day Out with Ike 2023

On Saturday, we ventured to Nickelmania with our six-year-old nephew Ike for his annual birthday outing with Fun Aunt and Uncle. We had a great time!

Ike played car- and motorcycle-racing games, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jurassic Park, and several of the ticket games.

Altogether, we pooled over 2,000 tickets, so Ike walked away a very happy kid with this Minecraft sword (plus a few other goodies):

I got bonked on the head with it only once, which I would call a great success for this type of event.

Our Day Out with Christian & Graham

After a few conflicts, family vacations, and more than one cancellation over the past few months, we were finally able to synchronize schedules to take 10-year-old Christian and his brother, seven-year-old Graham, out for their birthday outings with Fun Aunt and Uncle. They chose to go up to Boondocks in Kaysville.

Upon arrival, we divided up. JB took Christian mini golfing, while I took Graham to the arcade. Graham got right to work, winning two large bouncy balls from The Claw:

He wanted to go back to try to win a third one, but I legit thought we didn't have enough room in the car for another one for the trip home (they took up quite a bit of space).

Also, Skee-ball.

Meanwhile, JB and Christian had a great time golfing. Christian even scored a hole-in-one on one of the holes.

On our way home, we stopped by Swig for treats, because a trip out with us comes with that extra benefit, too. We had another wonderful afternoon with the niblings.

Our Day Out with Katy 2023

Our niece Katy (formerly known also as Kate) recently turned eight years old. That was back at the end of March. We're still catching up on birthday activities, and that led to our birthday outing with her this past Thursday evening.

First, we went to the store so that she could pick out a LEGO set that she wanted. This is the before picture, with everything still in the box:

This is what it looked like when we were done:

We also stopped by the new Centerville Fiiz to get treats, because that is exactly the kind of VIP treatment you get with Fun Aunt and Uncle. Katy is a pretty great kid, and we love spending time with her.

Our Day Out with Jake (& Christian)

On Saturday, we took our 11-year-old nephew Jake out to Nickelmania for his annual birthday outing with his favorite Fun Aunt and Uncle. As a bonus, his 9-year-old cousin and good buddy Christian joined us for the occasion.

Though we played a few of the classics (Pac-Man and whatnot), Jake was most interested in accumulating tickets to redeem for a number of tchotchkes and knickknacks. And we always do what the birthday kid wants (within reason). So, that's what we did.

As you can see from the picture, they actually shared our ticket total 50/50 and were spoiled with a lot of good stuff.

Our Day Out with Ike

On Saturday, it was our nephew Ike's turn for a birthday outing with his favorite Fun Aunt and Uncle. This incredible little five-year-old's birthday is on October 25, and, nearly two months later, we finally were able to coordinate our respective schedules to go out to Nickelmania. Biz and Kate joined us for the occasion.

Ike is a big fan of driving/racing games, and he chose a number of those kinds of games (car, motorcycle, snowmobile, etc.) to play. We also pooled our collective efforts and tickets to get the kids some goodies and swag when it was time to check out.

All told, it was another memorable Saturday at one of our favorite places in Utah.

Our Day Out with Graham 2022

Saturday was the date for our latest Fun Aunt and Uncle birthday outing. JB and I picked up newly six-year-old nephew Graham, and he chose for us to go to Nickelmania for an assortment of video and arcade games. The goal here was to collect as many tickets as possible so that Graham could pick out some prizes to take home with him.

I don't know how she does it, but JB once again hit a spin-the-wheel jackpot, earning 1,000 tickets and then after it another 250 tickets.

We almost totaled enough tickets to get the plush Donkey Kong he wanted. Sadly, it wasn't to be. He did, however, wind up with these cool items, all of which are green (his favorite color):

Graham is a pretty great kid and excellent conversationalist for a six-year-old in addition to his video game-playing strengths. Never a dull moment.

Our Day Out with Kate

Our niece Kate's sixth birthday occurred a few weeks ago. For her birthday this year, we were able to arrange for an outing with her in much less time than we did ... because, you know, the Pandemic That Shall Not Be Named.

At the store, Kate picked out a LEGO set. We took her and it to our house to build the set together.

Here's before:

... and after:

It had been too many years since I last built anything LEGO. Fortunately, Kate has been doing a lot of LEGO building and understood the directions very quickly. We may be a bit biased, but she's one of the smartest six-year-olds we know, and she is great company for a Saturday afternoon.

Christmas Day 2019

We had a white Christmas this year and woke up to snow on Christmas Day. Fortunately, the precipitation cleared up a bit late in the morning so that we could drive out to Grantsville to spend a few hours with JB's parents and her side of the family. Nearly everyone was there except Nicole and Spencer, who spent the holiday in England. (Incidentally, Nicole served in the same mission my dad served in many years prior.)

There were not one but two cheese balls there, along with a number of other holiday goodies. (Where I'm concerned, I'm pretty content with a cheese ball for a holiday party.) The kids also had a plethora of their toys to play with, including this wickedly awesome Nerf toy gun of Tatum's (one I could only have dreamed of when I was his age):

As the snow began to fall again out in Tooele County, we were back on the road and headed home to spend the rest of the day with Leia on her first Christmas Day and to watch cheesy Hallmark movies. We hope that you and your family and loved ones had a wonderful holiday, too.

Droids

Fun Aunt and Uncle were over at Ben's and Adi's home in Centerville for dinner Sunday. While we were there, we were introduced to the droids Christian and Graham got to build on their recent trip to Disney World.

Christian and his droid, Sparkle:

Graham and his droid, BB Blanket:

Uncle Paco may have been a bit jealous about this, but he'll live.

Plowman Family Dinner/January 2019

On Sunday, we gathered for monthly family dinner at Mom's home in North Salt Lake. We also celebrated the birthdays of the month, which in January include those of both Jessica and our missionary, Elder Dallin Plowman, now on the other side of the country and serving in the mission field in Maine.

Christian combined Mom's Noah's Ark set with Mike's old Millennium Falcon toy and created I guess what you'd call Solo's Ark:

Thus begins one of our favorite weeks of family get-togethers during the year, followed later on this week with Groundhog Day and the Super Bowl.

Arbuckle Family Dinner/October 2018

So . . .

The thought has occurred to me as of late that I need to get better about posting photos of activities for both sides of the family. I'm still wrapping my brain around this concept, but I am working on it and will try to do better.

Sunday night, it was our monthly family dinner with JB's side. Afterward, our nieces Alex and Olivia played some hymns and Primary songs on the piano:

. . . and the boys (Tatum, Spencer, and Jake) did, well, boy stuff. (To be honest, this is basically what the Plowman boys would probably be doing.)

They're warming up to me, little by little. Sure, it's hard to tell with these few photos, but I can assure you nevertheless that it's a fact.

Graham's Second Birthday Party

On Saturday, we celebrated my nephew Graham's second birthday. The theme was Toy Story, and the birthday boy was dressed up as Sheriff Woody for the occasion.

Among the gifts given was this fireman costume, which Graham really enjoyed trying out.

My Dinner with Jackson 2018

My incredible nephew Jackson turned ten years old last week. So, on Saturday, I took him out for our annual birthday dinner outing, because Fun Uncle and all that.

After a good meal at Pizza Pie Cafe, we went to the store, where he picked out a LEGO Minecraft set. He was pretty happy about that.

My Dinner with Kira 2017

My wonderful, very cute, never-a-dull-moment niece Kira turned nine years old last week. Naturally, that led to last Saturday's birthday dinner outing with her very own Fun Uncle Paco and JB joining us, as well.

She chose Chuck-a-Rama for dinner, where we enjoyed a lovely meal together. After that, we headed to Build-a-Bear to pick up some accessories for her new favorite toy, Vampirina.

My Dinner with Jackson 2017

My nephew Jackson recently turned nine years old. So, being the Fun Uncle that I am and all, I took him out to dinner at Sill's Cafe, because it was his choice, and he made it abundantly clear he wanted one of their scones.

Well, the story checks out. Sill's' scones are quite amazing.

From there, we went to Toys R Us, where he picked out a combination Nerf dart gun/zombie "brainsaw" (get it? like chainsaw, but for brains?). When it comes to zombie knowledge, fewer if any nine-year-olds can hold their own with Jackson.

Graham's First Birthday Party

On April 1, we celebrated Graham's first birthday with a party at his house in Centerville. Plenty of folks on both the Plowman and Shewell sides showed up for the festivities.

There was good food:

Graham enjoyed his cake perhaps a little too much:
